THE ELSIE MOTH’S GUIDE TO TAOCC

Aka: “oh gosh here we go”

copy-pasted because I’m lazy ;-;

TAOCC is, in a nutshell, like 10?ish mods (last I counted) making up a random TADC fic that started as a few askblogs and turned into a multiverse with lore, fourth wall breaks, and a heavily expanded universe. Here’s the lore basics:

TAOCC seemingly takes place over the span of October until now, in between episodes one and two. It will most likely have an lore update after 2 comes out. TADC exists within a server run and managed (and seemingly abandoned) by the company of C&A, which, depending on the character, is either:

A well-respected game development studio (People with Direction)

A shady company that will take anyone as test subjects (Hammer Anon)

A faceless set of developers with unknown motives (Sun and Gangle)

A respectable but unknown corporation that uses odd means to get people to test their hardware (Dunite I think?)

It’s most likely some combination of…all of the above. Generally, C&A is elusive and will not help the characters or get involved past backstory, with the exception of Lonn and Lattia, who are human developers who just…found this computer after a long story that I won’t get into lol.

Currently, the digital worlds are as follows:

TADC (run by Sun and Caine (on paper))

Dusk’s domain (run by Dusk)

The Bewitched Digital Kingdom (run by Hexe)

The Void (run by nobody, glues the various worlds together)

The Loch and It’s Surrounding Areas (unknown administrator, little is known about it in general except that there are dragons)

The Skies/The Heavens (similar to the void)

Now for the OOC stuff!

The Mods:

The mods are myriad and have multiple, wildly different approaches to making this setup work. Each will have different rules and guidelines on how they interact and what kind of content there is, which includes guidelines on suggestive, violent, or ridiculous content. Some mods write this thing like a book, trying to adhere to the standards of actual literature, while some are just here to have a good time and do whatever. Sometimes this even varies from character to character! Similar mods tend to form groups, and you shouldn’t feel pressured to interact with every single mod all the time. Mods ages range from 13-17, usually. Nobody younger than 13, obviously.

The canon characters:

The canons are dead.

…Okay that’s a joke and an exaggeration. Due to circumstances of various kinds, most of the canon character askblogs are deleted, inactive, etc. Below are their URLs and short explanations.

@/zooooble - Mod Rat, after a lot of problems caused by random anons (the canon askblogs were typical askblogs at first, before the extended universe) and others, left the fandom entirely. Mod rat was also Kinger’s mod.

@blue-tooth Moon mod was locked out of their acct and has not returned.

@/shiningwiththesunshelp - Mod Galaxy’s attempt to bring back moon as a character

@/team-buttonblossom - Viewer’s attempt to bring back Pomni and Ragatha, canonicity is currently being debated/is undecided as far as I know

@/cainetheringmaster - barely active, uninvolved in “anon lore”/Taocc proper

The canons weren’t and won’t be really involved in Taocc, besides sun. Taocc doesn’t really have “main characters” as much as it has “overarching plots that make characters relevant”/“known characters”/“main mods kinda ish”

@/silhouette-anon - called Soup Mod, semi-active, gnagle mod, runs the Silhouette plotline with Xeya

@/iciatheguardess - called Star mod, Icia Mod, active, runs the Bewitched Digital Kingdom plotline with Feiar.

@the-moth-from-elsewhere - MEEEEEEEE! Called Elsie, Dusk mod, active, runs Dusk’s domain and has the most fleshed out characters

@/theautumnalcat - called Autumn but also has a sona character named Autumn, Pyxel mod, active, no specific plotline, started Taocc as a whole!

@/kumo-taoc - called mod Kumo, active, local music person, Kumo mod, will cause problems on purpose

Cait? Cait?

A question asked (repeatedly, ad nauseam) since a certain document hit the ‘net.

Reason?

Well, I can think of quite a few, but the one that stands out most, to me, is that she can’t be a “married woman” AND be linked to Sam in any way, shape, or form. Not during hiatus. Oh no, sir! Not in the same home, shop, restaurant, building, street, city, or country. Not even a sliver of her background can possibly be traced back to one Sam Roland Heughan.

“Why all of the sudden?”, you ask?

Because there now is printed “proof” of her union with another. How could she ever explain why or how she is even in the same 50 mile radius of SRH without looking like a total fraud?

Remedy?

To go almost completely dark.

When is the last time you saw a personal picture of her? Book Club? WCC video? Leaning up against her loaned #ad Audi suv? Her, posing with her handmade botanical gin? (Now, that’s the biggest travesty of all!)

Hi Clare! I've been listening to your podcast and I love that there's a lot of talk about the bears there so I thought I'd ask you, right now there's a lot of accs on Twitter trying to be like them and make people think is all happening again and I know I know is all fake but like idk how to explain why?? Like why can we trust the bears but not all these accs?? My actual question is what was the one thing that made you realize the bears were actually Louis and Harry and not someone random??

Oh nonnie, you really know how to fire me up! Welcome to my favourite topic in all of Larrie fandom. Not the bears, per say, (though I love them with my entire being and they are the thing that kept me a larrie when shit got really hard and confusing) but about thinking critically about how communication is happening, what that looks like, and how we can separate the wheat from the chaff, so to speak, when it comes to weighing up evidence. 

A quick note - I am wary of the phrase ‘do your research’, especially since it’s become the catch-cry of conspiracy groups like Q etc etc. I believe that you should research, and consider the expert opinions (in this case, a combination of expert evidence, veteran larries’ experience, information from H & L themselves) but human beings are pattern seekers, and there is only so much ‘research’ will tell you, before your brain starts looking for patterns in the smallest things to create a narrative, and that’s not always how real life works. So you have to kind of hold two things in your mind - the first is that we will never know the full story, or even a fraction of it. (Maybe one day we’ll get a tell all, but I’m not holding my breath). The second thing to keep in mind is that real life is messy as fuck, and often stranger than fiction, and things that are TOO neat are things you want to investigate/think critically about/maintain a healthy suspicion about. 

So to your first question - how do you know all of those accts are fake in your gut? Often it’s because they are TOO neat. They line up too well with the story people are telling, which is rarely what the story is. It gets a lot of clout at the time, but long term it doesn’t make sense. I arrived in this fandom at the tail-end of the @goodbyeadulthood phenom, where anybody making any kind of sensible, evidence based theory was called a plant (mostly jokingly) (mostly) so I guess being able to see that this has all happened before gives me a bit of perspective when it comes to excitement about “insider accounts”. Accts like CBO and hscox94 have very clear patterns - they are ridiculously vague, they almost never predict (always following, not leading, events), and they conveniently change/adapt their story to the prevailing winds of fandom opinion. 

How we know the bears were the real deal then? I mean, honest answer is we really can’t ever know, but there is compelling evidence that they were. @tellmethisisnotlove has an excellent masterpost (that I just realised feature some of my own theories, lol) on how the bears link to 1D, and specifically to Harry and Louis. 

What people forget, though, because it’s been accepted fandom lore for so long, but many larries were not convinced that it was Harry and Louis themselves at the time. It’s only with hindsight that the majority agree. We knew they were connected to the band. RBB definitely started from (probably) Josh Devine, probably as a joke, because he created the first twitter acct, but it was very different in tone from what the bears would become. 

RBB really was just considered a cute tour mascot, and that only started to change in the Europe leg of the OTRA tour. Coincidently, this was after the 2 month break where BG was set up, H & L were separated, and L had a bunch of behind the scenes stuff going on with Sony and SYCO. Prior to this, H & L had been less cryptic in their resistance (big gay war of 2014 anyone?) and had paid a heavy, heavy price. 

So in Europe, RBB gets a pal, and all of a sudden, they’re being dressed up, usually in the same costume (this is why he was called Teddy Mercury to start) and was just a fun thing to watch out for. They were linked to the band (any roadie you talk to says there’s no fucking way they wouldn’t be signed off by the band) but not in a tangible way. 

It got really nuts in July (which, in my head, is when Louis takes over the bears fully, with Harry) for the US leg. This is when big money starts being spent, the scenes get way more elaborate, they start using the blue and green (and red) stickers, and they start featuring props about closeted gay artists, or famous people who had to hide a secret, or sony flip phones (you get the gist). My recollection is that it wasn’t until Vancouver, and the KD Lang book, that the fandom started thinking the Bears were telling us anything, and then we went back and with hindsight realised there were small references to events. 

Even then, there was extremely healthy skepticism in the fandom about the bears being directly from Louis and Harry until much later, when in London they had the blue and green spotlights and the ‘Love Larry’ picture. You can hear in the podcast ep the week we finally feel like we can say for sure it’s Louis (and we are hysterical about it) and that’s the week of Belfast, the countdown, the newcastle gay bar, and the reflection of Louis’ shirt in RBB’s sunglasses. That’s in OCTOBER. Nearly FIVE MONTHS of RBB and SBB leaving us cryptic clues and getting more and more elaborate. Five months of people (including die hard RBB fans like myself) constantly doubting themselves as to whether it really meant something. Moreover, the interview where they are asked about it was December, and so for many that was the final piece of the puzzle, so we forget now that there was so much uncertainty about how much we could trust it. 

Even now, there are things that we haven’t figured out about the bears, that suddenly make sense when something from the time is revealed, and that has been happening since hiatus. 

And that’s my answer - TLDR - that hindsight, critical thinking/understanding, and context are what tells us the bears are the real deal, and were orchestrated by Louis and Harry in response to events and pressures behind the scenes. That they found a way to support and encourage their LGBT fans (and allies) in a year where a lot of things were awful. Those bears were the goddamn light in the tunnel, showing us a way to understand.

hiatus fun ☽ hogwarts!au

“don’t you think you’re being a bit harsh?” jonas asks, head propped up on his fist as he watches eva shovel eggs into her mouth violently. his own plate was sitting neatly cleaned, the remnants of his breakfast having already disappeared back down to the kitchens ages ago. 

eva scoffs, and a bit of egg ejects itself from her mouth back to her plate. she sits up and drags the back of her hand across her mouth. “harsh? are you joking?” she says, swallowing the last bits of her breakfast before continuing. “she’s absolutely unbearable, you have to see that.”

“i think you’re a bit fixated,” jonas says analytically, “and it’s skewing your perception of the situation.”

“oh my god, please miss me entirely with the muggle psychobabble shite, thanks,” eva says blithely, reaching out for a square of toast and smearing it with entirely too much butter for the earliness of the hour and her own level of irritation. 

jonas peers at her evenly from under his heavy brow. he’s probably pissed off now, he absolutely loves the muggle psychobabble, maybe more than he loves eva. “oh come off it, i’m joking,” she adds hastily, nudging him with her foot under the table. “but honestly, there’s nothing harsh about calling her violently posh. like, no one would disagree. it doesn’t even have to be a bad thing, did you think of that?”

jonas heaves a deep, long-suffering sigh and rubs a hand over his face. he grabs for the strap of his messenger bag on the floor and brings it between his legs.

“are you going now?” eva asks, eyeing his bag. she tucks a strand of long, copper hair behind her ear, suddenly anxious. “you’re mad then, because i’ve decided that i can’t stand noora. do you fancy her or something?”

“you’ve noticed that we’re all stuck up in this drafty old castle to learn right?” he asks, mock concern painting his mouth. “i have class. but yeah, thanks for mentioning it, i am in love with noora, and actually we’re eloping in two weeks, and also, she’s fucking pregnant with a set of twins who will emerge from the womb with fully formed eyebrows, quoting marx–”

eva sets her chin to her palm, mouth falling open dumbly to communicate her utter lack of fucks. “do you think you might actually die from being such a swot?” 

jonas stands, ignoring her and slinging his back over his shoulder. he continues, “i’ve made sure of it by playing the communist manifesto audiobook against her stomach every night for the past three months–”

“–that’s at least grounds for foetal abuse,” eva interjects.

“–which is how i know that noora is fucking chill,” he finishes. he rubs a hand across the crown of his head, considering. “uh, well, chill isn’t the right word, but honestly, you’re being a complete knob about the whole thing, i was there, and she was only trying to help.”

“she corrected my wand movements in front of flitwick!” eva bursts out indignantly. “and my pronunciation! she thinks i’m stupid or something!”

jonas raises his hands in surrender, walking backwards away from the gryffindor table. “okay, whatever,” he says, unaffected. “i’ll see you later today, alright.”

“i can’t stand how you start shit and then just walk away from it,” eva calls after him, pushing herself up off the bench with one hand to keep an eye on him as he disappears into the throng of students moving towards their first classes. “it’s cowardly, it’s offensive to my people!”

his hand pops up over the top of the crowd, two fingers raised prominently in her direction. eva huffs, fork clattering against the wood of the table as she stands and pulls her own bag over her shoulder. jonas was the absolute worst. what did he mean by fixated even, honestly, what a load of bull.

okay so no one asked for this............ i’m sorry!!!!!!!!!! i try to focus on the browns and only the browns in this town, but once the idea of eva as ginny weasley and noora as posh pureblood ravenclaw came... there was no escape. there may be more of this. if there is, it will live on my main acct @mahistrado​, so come be friends w me!!
